Jane Hopkinson

Leather

Jane trained in theatre design and worked making props at Glyndebourne and the English National Opera. Designing and making was instinctive and the passion for leather and bags brought the two together. This was done by establishing a business at home, while starting a family, and later taking on a workshop space at The Turner Dumbrell Workshops Ditchling.

About

Jane’s love of leather started as a teenager buying leather skins from the local market and making bags, hats, clothing, and any accessory possible.
In making the bags Jane’s passion has always been to create, with innovation, originality and workmanship, a product that would last a lifetime and could be passed on through the generations. Jane works alongside her husband, a sculptor by training, and together they create two distinctive styles: sculptural forms and soft, fluid more organic shapes, using fine quality leathers. The Art Deco Movement has been an inspiration in the simple clean lines. Also being immersed in the Sussex countryside and always looking at the natural world inspired the creation of beautiful shapes.

Jane and her husband make everything from start to finish in the workshop, hand cutting and machine stitching the bags, using leathers obtained from Italy. Together they have made many bespoke bags for clients who like to customize their bag to a specific outfit or occasion. They have had commissions for film, galleries and exhibitions in the UK and sell now through the showroom, website and shows.
