Anne V Massey
Jewellery & Silversmithing
Anne graduated from Brighton Polytechnic in 1989 with a BA Hons in Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics. From 2000-2002 she did a City and Guilds course in Silversmithing at Sir John Cass School of Art. Since then she has had her workbench at Brass Monkeys in Hove, working as a designer-jeweller and –silversmith.
Anne’s jewellery is wearable sculpture. It is all made by the process of anticlastic raising, which produces sinuous, curvaceous three-dimensional forms. Inspiration is drawn from the natural world, marine invertebrates and plant forms being favourite sources, abstracted by the discipline of the technique. The pieces are made from sheet silver. Many are forged before forming to graduate thickness and introduce texture. Some designs include pins, catches, loops or wires which are integral – the whole made from a single piece of metal. Certain ranges have a definite inside and outside, which Anne sometimes emphasizes by having the inside surface plated in 22ct gold.
