Ian Payne

Ian turns bowls ‘tall forms’ and loose lidded boxes from a mix of sustainable and mostly local English hardwoods using renewable energy.

Ian’s designs revolve around flared and straight sided bowl shapes. He incorporates similar flared designs in his ‘tall forms’ and boxes.

Ian uses a traditional ebonising technique that was first documented in the 16^th Century and used by the Victorians, for high tannin content wood to create contrast and sharp lines. He enhances open grained wood using lime wax. He sometimes combines both techniques for an even more striking effect.

Ian incorporates beading into all his pieces to enhance their tactile nature.

He’s a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, ‘Find a Maker’ by Craft Festival, the Green Maker Initiative and exhibits at Dansel Contemporary Wood Gallery in Dorset.
