Sally Underwood is a knitwear designer living in Hastings. Graduating with a BA Hons in Fashion and Textiles in 1997 from Brighton University, Sally worked in London, Italy and Wales but finally picked up her vintage knitting machine when she relocated to Hastings and began making garments in 2019.
Sally Underwood is a Hastings based designer maker of knitted textiles. Working on a vintage knitting machine and using a computer Sally knits only in lambswool, felts and finishes all her pieces. Receiving a motor for her knitting machine in Uni after struggling, living with Arthritis she experimented with longer lengths and felting.
As a textile designer Sally uses bold graphics, abstract shapes and has a strong use of colour or just dinks of colour in more subtle pieces.
Sally works mostly made to order so that the garment will be made for you. It is a simple shaped garment and celebrates the Textile. The garments are jumpers, with or without collars, jackets fastened with poppers, zip or no fastener.
Sally graduated from Brighton Uni in 1997 but found her knitting practice again in Hastings when she settled and finally had space to set up again in 2012. After a lot of experimenting with maps and kids drawings she found her abstract style and enjoyment of colour again in 2019. Building her business name om pom pom because she does like to be beside the seaside tiddley om pom pom.
The soft finish and contemporary style of Sally’s work creating gender neutral hats, scarves, hot water bottles make for excellent Christmas gifts and Fisherman’s Smocks, Ponchos, Coatigans, Boleros and Wraps for a more exclusive gift.
