Glass - Annie McCabe

Glass

Annie graduated with BA Hons in Three Dimensional Design from Brighton University and works from her studio in Brighton. She specialises in creating flameworked (sometimes called lampworked) glass beads which she uses in her jewellery.

About

Annie hand makes each of the glass beads she uses in her contemporary jewellery using the 14th century Venetian techniques of flameworking (sometimes called lampworking). Using best quality transparent and opaque ‘soft Italian glass’ rods, she melts coloured glass in a flame and when molten, winds it around a steel rod. Beads are then sculpted and decorated before being annealed and cleaned ready for use in her jewellery. Annie’s inspiration comes from the natural world, particularly the sea, beach and the Downs near Brighton. The properties and potential of the medium itself also suggest new working approaches and techniques.

Every piece of jewellery Annie creates from her handmade beads is unique. Themes and ideas grow, are repeated and developed, but every finished piece is slightly different. Annie is happy to accept commissions and works closely with clients in the design stage to ensure the finished piece meets every expectation.
