Textiles - Julie French - Indian Bee Eater

Textiles

Julie graduated from East London University in 1999 with a degree in Printed Textiles and Surface Decoration.  She uses the sewing machine as a tool for drawing and has exhibited her work in London and East Sussex.  Each piece is unique and a one off.

About

Julie creates drawings and paints with machine thread, mostly onto furnishing fabrics and mainly using animals as her inspiration. She is inspired by a love of textures and layers and, although this can be achieved with paint, she believes that stitch can really encourage the viewer to speculate on how the work was achieved.

The speed and capricious nature of the sewing machine, when used in this unconventional way, reflects characteristics of the subjects.  Threads are purposely left loose over or around the image to allow the illusion of more depth and movement.
