Jose is a self-taught fibre artist making crocheted bird sculptures and art from her home studio in Sussex. Birds have been her passion since childhood, and she combines crochet, needle-felt and embroidery techniques to create life-like birds that evoke the character and energy of the real thing.
Much of Jose’s inspiration comes from watching the bird-life in the countryside around her. Working from her own observations and from photographs, she uses sketches to get a sense of the bird’s personality and proportions, before carefully choosing natural yarns that recreate its colours and texture. The right yarns help to bring her creations to life, and favorites include British Shetland yarn with its beautiful natural colour palette, as well as more luxury fibres such as mohair, alpaca and silk.
Each bird is hand crocheted to Jose’s own design, which is adapted and evolved as she works. The bird is filled with carded sheep’s wool and fine details are added using needle-felt and embroidery. Lastly, every bird is tagged with a uniquely numbered leg-ring.
All of her birds are available to order and she is happy to discuss commissions.
