Metals
David Mortimer, Mort, has been running Firebird Forge for more than 20 years. He trained as an archaeologist and Paleopathologist through tertiary degrees (BA, MSc & PhD) before retraining in traditional blacksmithing at Holme Lacy, Hereford.
He has taught and demonstrated in many countries worldwide and carries out commission work throughout the south east of England.
About
The majority of Mort’s work is traditionally forge welded together using the fire, the anvil and a hammer. This approach not only allows Mort to replicate the metalworking techniques used over the last two thousand years but also creates a fluidity and flow to the metalwork that is rarely seen in modern fabrication (electric welding).
All his works are personally designed; he draws most of his inspiration from nature and historic artistic styles, and having an extensive background in archaeology has led to many commissions from museums, private collectors and the heritage sector (English Heritage and The National Trust).
Working mostly from his forge on the ancient Buckhurst Estate, he has also decades of teaching experience, both through one day experience days that he runs and through attending craft fairs and shows with his associated group, the Sons of Ivaldi (a trio of craftsmen that teach as well as demonstrate throughout the south east).
