Jewellery and Silversmithing

Jo McDonald is a designer-maker specialising in combining porcelain with precious metals and stones in a fine-jewellery context.

Jo’s training includes a degree in Jewellery Design from Central St Martins and a diploma in silversmithing and jewellery from The Cass in London.

About

Using British porcelain, Jo reinvents the material to emulate the delicacy and qualities of coral, bone, and tusk in bold sculptural forms with crusts of precious metal and jewels. The specific porcelains chosen are known for their strength and resistance as well as for their suitability to be used with the body; they are smooth and lightweight to the touch. The inspiration for this jewellery is ‘Art Deco – au sauvage’; these pieces combine a 1930s aesthetic (in their strong curved shapes using block colour) with references to art movements of the time (in their expressive line-and-dot detail).

Jo’s jewellery designing and problem solving skills have led to gathering inspiration for her exotic and original pieces on her frequent voyages and commissioned projects creating jewellery for Madame Tussauds figures in their world wide exhibitions as well as collections and pieces for private clients.
