Jewellery & Silversmithing
Jo McAllister studied Jewellery, Silversmithing, & Allied Crafts at The Cass, BA (Hons) 2001, MA 2003. She was granted a Crafts Council Development Award in 2004 and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Based in East Sussex, McAllister works on commissions, editions and artist jewels.
Using Stone-Age tools percussively as hammer and anvil, Jo McAllister achieves textures reminiscent of both earthly and lunar landscapes. Made in 999 fine silver, 18ct and 22ct gold, her jewellery features granite textures highlighted by glinting edges. Heavy-gauge rings and bangles are wrapped, pendants and brooches folded. Her work is concerned with light and space, initially prompted by the deceptive qualities of desert light and the textures of desiccation within it. More recently, metaphysical jewellery for collection, observation, and enjoyment has been made in response to walking, taking photographs, and making notes in heathlands, woodlands, seashores, and parklands.
